Well Spiked EggNog

by Chef T on December 3, 2008

This holiday season, instead of the standard bottle of wine gift to bring to parties, bring a bottle of tuned-up eggnog. I recently found a great proportion of liquor to nog that was a crowd pleaser at several gatherings.

First, start with the best eggnog you can find. In my area of Southern Delaware, nothing beats Lewes Dairy. I was going to be ambitious and make my own eggnog and realized that I would be foolish to compete against the likes of Lewes Dairy.

For the spike, I settled on a trio of spirits. Christian Brothers brandy, Bacardi gold rum and Illy espresso liqueur. Illy makes exceptional coffee and this liqueur is delicious. You can substitute another coffee liqueur such as Kahlua.

Here are your proportions:

  • 1 gallon of eggnog
  • 1 pint of rum
  • 1 pint of brandy
  • 4 ounces of coffee liqueur
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon of kosher salt

Mix well the day before serving. If you want to kick it up a notch on the service meter, rim a martini glass with a mixture of sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Shake your nog with ice and strain into your glass. Happy holidays!

I was at one of said parties, and I enjoyed this exact recipe quite a bit. It really had the ability to get the holiday spirit working. Well done Chef T, well done!
